Facility Information Facility: GSS SD Howard Center Location: Howard, SD Address: 300 W Hazel Ave, Howard, SD 57349, USA Shift: Varies Job Schedule: PRN Weekly Hours: Varies Job Summary The Medication Assistant (MA) acts as a caregiver, delivering resident-focused nursing care and daily living support to assigned individuals under the guidance of a charge nurse. The MA is knowledgeable in providing age-appropriate care that addresses both the physical and psychological needs of residents according to their care plans. Key responsibilities include: Assisting with essential health care tasks, such as bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, and undressing. Obtaining and documenting vital signs while offering psycho-social support and personal care. Helping residents with mobility, including transferring, repositioning, and walking, using proper techniques and equipment. Facilitating range of motion and passive exercises. Contributing to food preparation and dining experiences, ensuring a positive atmosphere for residents. Administering prescribed medications as directed by a licensed nurse, adhering to state regulations. Documenting care outcomes, medication administration, and any changes in resident conditions. Collecting non-invasive body fluid samples and vital signs. Providing housekeeping and laundry services to maintain clean living spaces. Supporting wellness and recreational programs, encouraging resident participation. Engaging in departmental committees and task forces as needed. Qualifications High school diploma or GED is preferred but not mandatory. Minimum age of 18 is preferred. Previous experience as a clinical or nursing assistant in long-term care is advantageous. Must complete annual department-specific competency testing and maintain a record of continuing education credits, with a minimum of 12 hours required each year based on state mandates. All necessary department-specific certifications must be kept up to date. A valid driver’s license and auto insurance may be required, depending on the role. State-Specific Requirements: Iowa: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification is required, along with successful completion of a state-approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistant course after obtaining CNA certification. Minnesota: Nursing assistant certification is necessary, including completion of a 75-hour course and registration with the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry, along with a state-approved Trained Medication Assistant course. North Dakota: Requires CNA certification and successful completion of a state-approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistant course. Medication Assistant I certification is needed for Assisted Living or Basic Care facilities, while Medication Assistant II certification is required for skilled nursing facilities. South Dakota: Completion of the state-approved Certified Medication Aide (CMA) course is mandatory, with certification maintained through the State Board of Nursing. For all facilities, candidates must possess the state-required certified/trained medication aide certification (CMA or TMA) and have active certified nursing assistant registration in the state of practice, or the ability to obtain it within 120 days.
