We currently have an exciting and challenging opportunity for an experienced electrical engineer , to join our DIII-D (National Fusion Facility) program in San Diego, CA. This position is for someone specializing in analog and digital electronic controls, who will work independently and with Operations staff and other engineers and technicians to upgrade and modernize existing research equipment and design new circuits and systems. The candidate will also support the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of systems and circuit boards, and will be expected to carry a design from concept through fabrication, testing, commissioning and operation.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Design new analog , and digital control circuits and modify existing ones to meet specific requirements Update control circuits containing obsolete components by selecting and substituting suitable replacement components Use CAD software to simulate circuit functions and to layout printed circuit boards (PCBs) Coordinate the fabrication and assembly of PCBs using in-house resources and outside vendors Test and troubleshoot electrical/electronic control circuits and systems Put together and give presentations at formal design reviews Read and understand electrical and electronic schematic diagrams and determine the functions of the circuits depicted.
Responsible for personnel safety of their own working group as well as others interacting with their equipment.

Other Responsibilities: Utilize a standard set of electrical engineering skills to complete assigned tasks Flexibility in work hours is necessary to cover extended operation days and when emergency repairs are needed to recover from a system failure. Perform other duties as assigned. Responsible for observing all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company. Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
Job Qualifications: Typically requires a Bachelors degree, Masters degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering or related technical field and progressively complex engineering experience as follows; four or more years experience with a Bachelors degree and two or more years experience with a Masters degree. May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education.

Must have an understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory, and practices in related technical specialties.

Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment.

Must have excellent communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team; able to perform complex tasks in one engineering area, and lead a team of less experienced professional employees on semi-routine tasks.
Able to work extended hours as required.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE:

  • Familiarity with VME, PLC programming, and computer hardware and networking is preferred.
  • Recent analog design experience.
